AI for Migratory Birds: Safeguarding Owls through Technology"
Students will explore AI and emerging technologies, understand how they can be applied to environmental challenges, and collaborate to propose innovative solutions to protect migratory birds, focusing on owls.
Introduction to AI and Emerging Technologies (1 week)
- Objective: Students in class will be shown videos and explained how ai and other emerging technologies (drones, satellite imaging, etc.), focusing on how these can be applied to environmental challenges.
- Ask students to research online at home or in class (e.g., AI to track endangered species, prevent deforestation, or monitor air and water quality).
- Students will work in groups and present their findings to the the rest of the class.
- Objective: Students will research the challenges that migratory birds, especially owls, face due to human activity, climate change, and habitat destruction.
- Task:
- Groups will investigate specific threats to owl species during migration, such as illegal hunting, loss of habitat, or accidents caused by human-made structures like power lines and post these on the eTwinning forum.
- Objective: Students will brainstorm and come up with a creative way to use AI to help safeguard migratory owls.
- Task:
- In their groups, students will come up with an idea for an AI-based solution to protect owls during migration. Ideas can range from AI-powered drone patrols that detect poachers, to a machine that predicts and warns about dangerous migration routes.
- Each group will create a poster and present their idea in class where they explain:
- The problem they aim to solve
- How their AI solution works
- How it will benefit migratory birds, especially owls.
- The poster will be uploaded in the Twinspace and in the school social media accounts, on boards across the school.
After the presentations, students will reflect on:
- - How AI can make a positive impact on environmental conservation.
Throughout this project, one of the important tasks you will come across is carrying out research work, as is the case with this challenge. Here are some of the questions you'll be facing:
- How and where to start?
- Where can I find the information I need?
- What to do with this information?
- How to organize and present the information?
This guide will teach you how to solve information problems, using a six-step model, commonly referred to as the Big 6 Model.
